Tax Corner- Important IRS Update: Paper Check Payments Ending After September 30, 2025

June 17, 2025 | Weekly Commentary

Starting September 30, 2025, the IRS will no longer accept paper checks for most tax payments. This change is part of a broader federal initiative to modernize payment systems and reduce fraud. If you typically mail a check to the IRS, it’s time to prepare for a new way to pay.

What’s Changing?

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is phasing out paper checks for federal payments. This means that after September 30, 2025, you must use an electronic method to pay your taxes.

What Are Your Payment Options?

Here are the main ways to pay your taxes electronically:

  • IRS Direct Pay: Pay directly from your bank account at IRS.gov/DirectPay
  • IRS2Go App: Make payments from your mobile device
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS): Ideal for businesses and individuals
  • Debit or Credit Card: Available through IRS-approved payment processors
  • Note: Additional fees apply when paying by credit card.

What If You Don’t Have a Computer or Internet Access?

If you don’t have access to a computer or the internet, you’re not out of options

  • Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to ask about alternative payment methods
  • Visit a local IRS office (Taxpayer Assistance Center) for in-person help
  • Request an exception if you qualify due to lack of access or other hardship
