April 21, 2026 | Weekly Commentary

Once your taxes are filed, the next step is simple: wait…and wonder when the refund will be deposited into your bank account. The good news—you don’t have to wait in the dark. The IRS and states have official online tools you can use to track your refund.

Checking your Federal Refund

To track your federal refund, go directly to https://www.irs.gov.

On the home page, there are two ways to track your refund.

  • You can either log into your IRS account using id.me or
  • You can use the Refund Tracker tool

To use the Refund Tracker Tool, you will need:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Filing Status (Single, Married filing Jointly, etc.)
  • The exact amount of the refund you are expecting.

The tool will show your refund moving through the three states: received, approved, and sent.

Pennsylvania Refunds

If you filed a Pennsylvania state return, you can track your refund at https://mypath.pa.gov/. In the middle of the webpage is the section “Where’s My Refund?”

To use their online refund tracker tool, you will need:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • The exact amount of the refund you are expecting.

New Jersey Refunds

If you filed a New Jersey state return, refund tracking is available through https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/checkrefundstatus.shtml

To use their online refund tracker tool, you will need:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Filing Status (Single, Married filing Jointly, etc.)
  • The exact amount of the refund you are expecting.

Why is my Refund Taking so Long?

Refunds typically take 4 to 6 weeks for electronically filed returns and more than 12 weeks for paper-filed returns. In addition, identity verification checks and claiming certain credits can sometimes cause delays.
