Taxes Corner- IRS Issues Tax Relief for Hurricane Debby Victims in FL, GA, SC, and NC

August 20, 2024 | Weekly Commentary

In the wake of Hurricane Debby, the IRS has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in certain areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.  This relief provides much-needed flexibility for those affected by the disaster.

The tax relief postpones various tax filings and payment deadlines until February 3, 2025.  This includes:

  • Individuals and businesses that have a valid extension to file their 2023 return. Please note that payment due on these returns is not eligible for extra time as it was to be paid by the original due date.
  • Quarterly estimated income tax payments are normally due September 16, 2024, and January 15, 2025

This relief will be automatically applied to taxpayers with an address in the designated disaster area, so there’s no need to contact the IRS to request it.
